BIS Hallmarking & HUID Guide: How to Verify Gold Purity Online Step-by-Step

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the national standards body of India operating under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. Hallmarking is the certified verification of the proportionate content of precious metal in gold and silver articles. Mandatory hallmarking ensures that when you pay for 22 Karat gold, you receive authentic 91.6% fine gold, eliminating under-karating and protecting consumers across India.

Since the introduction of HUID, older four-mark systems were streamlined into three clear, laser-engraved marks: 1. The BIS Logo: The triangular emblem of the Bureau of Indian Standards. 2. Purity & Karat Grade: Explicit purity indication, such as 24K999 (99.9%), 24K995 (99.5%), 22K916 (91.6%), 18K750 (75.0%), or 14K585 (58.5%). 3. 6-Digit Alphanumeric HUID: A unique code like "AB1234" laser-etched onto the piece.

Any consumer can independently verify their purchase in less than 60 seconds: Step 1: Download the "BIS Care" app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Step 2: Open the app and tap "Verify HUID" on the home dashboard. Step 3: Enter the 6-character alphanumeric code engraved on your jewellery piece. Step 4: Tap Search. The app instantly displays: Jeweller Registration Number & Name, Assaying & Hallmarking Centre (AHC) details, Article Type, and Date of Hallmarking.

Before HUID, testing records were held locally at assaying centres. With centralized cloud tracking on the national BIS portal, an ornament cannot be tampered with or counterfeited.
